New members, advisors and allies join The Lee Communities Coalition

The Lee Communities Coalition (TLCC), an alliance of civic and community organizations that united in August 2026 to oppose sweeping changes to Lee County’s Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Code proposed with no public input, is continuing to grow as new organizations join the opposition to changes. The first week of September marks an important time for shorebird research and conservation. Every year, scientists and community members around the world participate in Global Shorebird Counts, leading up to World Shorebirds Day on Sept. 6. SCCF works every day to safeguard shorebirds and has been taking part in these counts since 2016. With help from partners and volunteers, the SCCF shorebird team surveyed Sanibel, Captiva, Bunche Beach, and other SCCF properties in Fort Myers, counting 3,280 shorebirds and seabirds from 30 species. Joint Celebration of Life to be held

A joint Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, Oct. 10, at 3 p.m. in the chapel at The Sanibel Community Church to honor the Rev. Dr. Edward VanderHey and Mrs. Barbara VanderHey. A reception will follow at The Fellowship Hall. Both were very active residents of Sanibel until about 10 years ago when they moved to Shell Point. VanderHey was a pastor at SCC and they were both very active in FISH, The Rotary Club, the Senior Center, and they volunteered for just about everything on the island, including teaching Safe Driving classes for seniors at the Sanibel Recreation Center.
