This coming Tuesday evening, Nov. 10, the Sanibel Island Fishing Club will be holding its second monthly meeting of the 2026-27 season. The meeting will be held in the north room of the Sanibel Island Community House, 2173 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel.

The meeting gets underway at 5:30 p.m. with a half-hour social among the angling members. The presentation begins at 6 p.m. sharp. There is no admission charge for this event, and the angling public is cordially invited to attend. Refreshments and pizza slices are available at a nominal charge.

This year the club’s focus is on “Back to the Basics,” and every presentation will guide attendees through the best bait, tackle, and methods to use when catching fish in the waters surrounding Sanibel and Captiva.

This month’s featured speaker is Captain Larry Hendricks of Tall Tails Charters.

Hendricks is a USCG-licensed guide based in Fort Myers, Florida. His presentation will focus on his experience as a near-shore guide. The term “near shore” can best be described as the various reefs, ledges, and hard bottoms located no more than nine nautical miles from the shoreline.

Hendricks focuses on any number of nearshore species, including kingfish (king mackerel), Spanish mackerel, mangrove snapper, gag, red and goliath grouper, cobia, sheepshead, and a wide variety of reef fish. He will discuss the best baits to use, the best reefs to target, and how to catch these prized fishes.

Hendricks fishes out of a 2018 Pathfinder 25-foot hybrid. The boat is large enough to accommodate up to six nearshore anglers. His tackle choices include Penn reels and St. Croix rods. Originally from Ohio, he grew up fishing the nearby rivers, lakes, and the open waters of Lake Erie. Moving to Southwest Florida more than three decades ago, he has been a successful saltwater fishing guide for over 20 years. Tired of fishing in the back bay and want some professional tips on the thriving near-shore fishery, this is a meeting not to miss.
