Sanibel is a special island
To the editor:
I have had the privilege of coming to Sanibel since 1975 and my family has been residents since 1991. I am fortunate to now make the island my permanent residence.
Over the years, I have seen many positive and negative changes to this wonderful island and have accepted the negative as a necessary part of the march of time.
I have never written a letter to the editor, but find myself compelled to write in support of the beautifully written letter by Anitia Brahn in last week’s edition of the paper. Her factual presentation was articulate and extremely moving. Her expression of humanity was heartening and, until the past several years represented what I thought made Sanibel so special.
The concept that as islanders we care for human beings that are a part of our lives here, just as much as we care for our flora and fauna. It takes many people to make this island special and their contributions to the island have nothing to do with where they may sleep at night. They are still a material and inseparable part of the fabric of our community, its commerce, and the lives of people who live here.
Moreover, they are often the face of the island to our tourists. I ardently hope that an inclusive humanitarian principle continues to be one of the core driving forces of our island.
