Guest commentary: Stay weather aware during summer months
Summer on Sanibel is a great time of year to enjoy the island. Our beaches, waterways, parks, bike paths and outdoor spaces provide residents and visitors with countless opportunities to experience the island’s natural charm. However, the summer season also brings afternoon storms and one of Florida’s most serious weather hazards: lightning.
As we move through the summer, I encourage everyone to stay weather aware, take thunder and lightning alerts seriously, and seek proper shelter at the first sign of danger. Public safety decisions — such as the recent cancellation of the Fourth of July Parade due to lightning — are never made lightly. Every decision prioritizes keeping people safe.
We also want to alert the community to a recent fraud report involving emails that falsely appear to come from the city of Sanibel Planning Department. These fraudulent emails include fake invoices, demand immediate payment by wire transfer, and instruct recipients to contact a non-city email address for payment instructions.
Whether facing severe weather or financial fraud, awareness and preparation are two of the best ways we can protect ourselves and one another. Thank you for helping to keep Sanibel safe, informed and prepared!
