Repaving Rabbit Road SUP would also help

1 min read

To the editor:

A letter published in the May 13, 2026, issue of the Island Reporter thanked the city of Sanibel for the new signage encouraging cyclists to use the Shared Use Path (SUP) along Rabbit Road.

I too wish to thank the city for the signage, but to really incentivize cyclists it has a bit more work to do!

The SUP along Rabbit Road is probably the roughest, bumpiest stretch of pathway on the island. It’s a shame because that stretch is also one of the quietest and most scenic stretches of pathway on the island.

It’s so bumpy as to make even a casual rider like myself much less likely to use it. I can only imagine how painful the ride would be for some of the more serious, speedy bikers. Serious bikers ride serious, expensive bikes, and I would not want to risk damaging my tires or rims on that stretch.

In addition to new signs, some new, smooth pavement would go a long way to increasing traffic on that pathway and less on Rabbit Road.
