As your police chief, I’m proud to share the continued efforts behind the “Slow Down Sanibel” initiative — a community-wide commitment to keeping our island safe while preserving the relaxed, welcoming character that makes Sanibel so special.

Our roadways are shared by drivers, cyclists, pedestrians and even wildlife. With so many people enjoying the outdoors, slowing down behind the wheel is one of the simplest and most effective ways we can protect one another. On an island where no speed limit exceeds 35 miles per hour, taking your time isn’t just encouraged: it’s our way of life.

This initiative combines a strong focus on community outreach, public education and fair, data-driven enforcement to promote safer driving habits. Residents and visitors will continue to see safety messaging through city communication channels, along with tools like speed notification trailers placed in areas of concern. In addition, I have assigned two officers exclusively to traffic and DUI enforcement, allowing us to focus police resources during higher-risk times and increase visibility on our roadways. These efforts, guided by community reports, traffic data and officer observations, help ensure our approach remains consistent, transparent and responsive to local needs.

I encourage everyone, whether you live here or are just visiting, to embrace “island time” when you’re on our roads. Giving yourself a few extra minutes, staying attentive and showing courtesy to others can make a meaningful difference in preventing crashes and keeping Sanibel safe for all. Together, we can continue to protect the quality of life that defines our community, one safe mile at a time.
