Santiva Islanders and Chase Bank partner to offer Fraud Prevention Seminar
Financial fraud is on the rise, and scammers are getting more convincing every day. Santiva Islanders has teamed up with Chase Bank to bring a free 30 minute seminar, presented by Chase Money Skills, that will help individuals recognize scams before they cost them and know exactly what to do if targeted.
The seminar will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, at Santiva Islanders Community Center, 2330 Palm Ridge Rd., Unit 11.
Attendees will learn the four tricks found in almost every scammer’s toolbox: pretending to have an existing relationship with you, offering a prize or threatening a problem, insisting you send money in a specific way, and pressuring you to act right now. The seminar will walk through today’s most common schemes, including fake calls from the IRS, Social Security, Medicare, or your bank, urgent messages from a “loved one” in distress, can’t miss investing and crypto opportunities, and fake ads and listings on social media and vacation rental sites.
Attendees will also leave with eight simple tips for staying safe, such as treating checks, wires, gift cards, and crypto like cash, never sharing personal or financial information in response to unsolicited contact, and blocking unwanted calls and texts. And if the worst happens, you’ll know what to do: who to call (including the National Elder Fraud Hotline at 1-833-FRAUD-11), how to place a fraud alert or security freeze with the credit bureaus, and how to report to law enforcement and the Federal Trade Commission.
Stick around afterward for a wine and cheese party with light hors d’oeuvres. Bring questions and a friend.
