Walkers will cross Sanibel end to end on foot, from sunrise at Lighthouse Beach to Blind Pass during Camino de Sanibel.

St. Michael’s Spiritual Pathways will host the Camino de Sanibel, a one-day pilgrimage walk across the island, on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2027.

The Camino de Sanibel is based on the Camino de Santiago, the historic pilgrimage route through Europe that has drawn walkers to Santiago de Compostela in Spain for more than a thousand years. Like its namesake, the island walk is a personal journey of physical challenge, simplicity, and self-reflection: one island, one day, one direction.

“Sanibel Island is the length of a day’s walk on the ancient Camino de Santiago, with a lighthouse at one end and an open pass at the other end, with a road connecting them,” said Rev. Dr. Sally Haynes, Pilgrimage Director. “The Camino de Santiago is used by people of all faiths, including non-religious, secular people. In the same spirit, all are welcome to join us on this Camino de Sanibel, to open yourself to the gifts you’ll find by walking the island in a day with intentionality and grace.”

The full route covers 11.8 miles. It begins with a staggered sunrise start at Lighthouse Beach between 7 and 7:30 a.m. and ends at Blind Pass Beach. Walkers who prefer a shorter day can join at one of two additional starting points: the 4.8-mile mark at mid-island or the 7.7-mile mark toward the west end.

Six stops along the route will offer water, snacks, and lunch. Every walker will receive a Camino de Sanibel shell to wear, a second shell to carry, a pilgrim credential to be stamped along the way, and a certificate of completion.

Every walker must be registered, including those joining at the mid-island or west-end starting points. The registration link goes live at 6 a.m. on Nov. 2 at www.saintmichaels-sanibel.org, where more information about the walk is also available. Space is limited, and registration will close when the walk is full.

Spiritual Pathways is a program of St. Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church, 2304 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel, offering contemplative practices and programming open to the whole island community.
