Sanibel Dance, Pilates and Yoga will be offering a variety of classes for children and adults beginning Tuesday, Jan. 24. Debbie Sheme, founder of Sanibel Dance, Pilates and Yoga opened her dance studio four years ago after discovering that there weren’t a lot of options of extracurricular activities for children on the island after moving here seven years ago.

“I decided to run the dance program as more of me giving back to the community,” Sheme said. “For the little kids, it’s like a second home to them.”

For kids and teens ages three and up, Sheme will be offering ballet, tap, aerial yoga, pilates, jazz and pointe lessons for $17 per hour. Parents can pay monthly or in full for a 10 week session. The deadline to register for classes is Monday, Jan. 23. In addition to teaching, she also hosts children’s birthday parties as well. For information on registering for children’s classes, go to sanibeldance.com.

Sheme, who has been dancing for 36 years, turned to yoga after her mother lost her battle with breast cancer.

“I noticed that I just needed yoga. I was depressed after the loss of my mom, I needed to breath, I needed to lay on my mat and just completely let go. I then realized that the dance and the pilates wasn’t enough for myself or my clients. I needed some other piece of the puzzle and that missing piece was the yoga,” she said.

Eventually, Sheme and her husband both flew to Europe to get certified and then she opened her yoga studio. Mark, her husband, teaches SUP yoga which is a stand up paddle board yoga class. Her adult division includes daytime and evening classes in pilates mat, pilates equipment reformer, gentle yoga, vinyasa, hathayoga, beach yoga, aerial yoga, SUP paddleboarding, dance classes and wellness events and workshops. All levels are welcomed.

On Jan. 8, Feb. 12 and Mar. 19, Sheme will be hosting a yoga brunch event that will be held at the studio located at 975 Rabbit Road. For $40, individuals will get an hour long vinyasa yoga class, brunch, a smoothie or juice and a chance to win three free classes. Tickets for students are $20. Yoga begins at 10 a.m. following brunch at 11:15 a.m. For more information on classes or the yoga brunch event, contact Debbie Sheme at (484) 459-3971 or go to sanibelpilatesyoga.com.
