The Fort Myers High School girls basketball team has picked up some bragging rights. The team was invited to compete at the elusive Nike Tournament of Champions in Arizona Dec. 18. But to do so, the girls need to raise $800 per player for the tournament.

On Saturday, Oct. 29, at 9 a.m., the girls will hold a car wash at the Sanibel Fire Department on Palm Ridge Road to raise money for their upcoming trip.

Last year, the team had an impressive 27-5 season. The girls practice every day of the week unless they have a game that day. This past June, one of their players, Destanni Henderson became a member of the USA Women’s U17 World Championship Team.

This past February, the girls also took home the state title when they played against Oakland Park Northeast in Lakeland, garnering a 60-45 victory.

“Our greatest accomplishment was winning the state championship which was the first time ever in our high school’s history and our school is over 100 years old,” said Maxime Miville.

The car wash will be based on donations. The Sanibel Fire Department is located at 2351 Palm Ridge Road.
