Lions earn more certifications for diabetes screenings
On Oct. 11, five members of the Sanibel-Captiva Lions Club completed the necessary certification by Lion Dr. Norma Callahan and can now perform diabetes blood glucose screening.
They join three additional Lions whose training includes a background of the disease, diabetes nutrition and hands-on training for the strict procedures used in the blood screening process to protect both the screener and the screening subject.
“When blood is being tested, even a minute amount such as a finger prick,” noted Lion Tom Rothman. “Surgical gloves must be changed for every person and hand sanitizer used to minimize the spread of infection and blood born diseases.”
The Lions mission is to ‘eliminate preventable blindness’ and diabetic retinopathy, leading to blindness, can be a consequence of uncontrolled diabetes.
Upcoming Lions Club health screenings at the Sanibel Recreation Center, at 3880 Sanibel-Captiva Road, is as follows:
• Diabetes — Friday, Nov. 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
• Vision/Hearing — Friday, Dec. 17 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
• Diabetes — Friday, Jan. 14 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
