Volunteers sought for flag installation
The city of Sanibel is inviting community members, along with local businesses, organizations and their employees, to assist with A Field of Heroes. Commemorating the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on 9/11, the tribute will feature 2,977 American flags — one for each life lost — on display at the Sanibel Community Park, at 2231 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel. Volunteers are needed from Aug. 31 through Sept. 5 to install the flags at the park, working under the direction of city staff. They will place and space the flags according to a pre-established grid. No prior experience is necessary; instructions will be provided. Because the work involves repeated bending and outdoor activity, volunteers should dress comfortably and bring sunscreen, bug spray and water. Advance registration is required. To register, visit https://pointapp.org/orgs/2557. For more information, call 239-472-0345. In addition, the city is still seeking sponsors for the American flags. As of Aug. 18, about 10% of the 2,977 needed sponsorships. To sponsor flags, visit https://app.seemylegacy.com/community/2787/campaign/9060 or stop by the Sanibel Recreation Center, at 3880 Sanibel-Captiva Road, Sanibel — credit cards only.
