THE COMMUNITY HOUSE The Community House will present a Community Social, with the theme National Vinyl Record Day, on Aug. 12 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Sanibel.

The islands community will have a chance to dust off their old records at a unique happy hour.

The Community House (TCH) will host a Community Social, with the theme National Vinyl Record Day, on Aug. 12 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Sanibel. The event will feature music, food and drinks.

“A lot of places are slow because the islands are slow, so it’s something to do,” Community Engagement Coordinator Ivy Ankerson said of the offseason for Captiva and Sanibel. “So we wanted to provide a little party, a little get-together for the community before the new season starts.”

National Vinyl Record Day is recognized around the country on Aug. 12. It was founded to commemorate the day that Thomas Edison finished his first working phonograph in 1877.

“We were looking up fun national days in the month of August,” she said. “We thought that doing the vinyl records would be cool, kind of old-school.”

Attendees can contribute to the playlist for the evening by bringing a record from their collection.

“People are encouraged to bring their favorite vinyl record, if they have one,” Ankerson said. “We will also have records, so people aren’t required to bring one.”

“It’s kind of a way to connect with each other and learn a little more about each other,” she noted.

TCH will provide complimentary appetizers.

“We’ll have some refreshments,” Ankerson added. “And we’ll have a cash bar.”

In addition, attendees can get in the spirit and dress in the attire of their favorite musical decade.

“If people want to dress in their favorite music decade, they can,” she said.

Tickets are $5 for members and $20 for non-members.

Entry is free for nonprofit employees and interns, but they must call to reserve a spot.

The islands are invited to secure their ticket.

“It’s a chance for people in the community to get to know each other kind of on a different level,” Ankerson said. “You are sharing a part of yourself by sharing your music.”

“And it’s a good opportunity to get together during the offseason and connect,” she added.
