New owner steering Island Condo Maintenance
A longtime swimming pool and spa maintenance business on Sanibel is under new ownership.
Matt Smith closed on Island Condo Maintenance in April and has since been steering the business forward with new energy and fresh ideas. Established in 1971, it was first owned by the Walters.
“Our bread and butter is pool service, pool maintenance and cleaning. We also do pool repairs,” he said, noting that the range of service that they offer includes spas. “We do resurfacing, as well.”
A University of Tennessee, Knoxville graduate who majored in marketing and logistics, Smith previously worked in medical device sales. He and his family — wife Lauren and two sons, ages 4 and 1, with a daughter expected in November — relocated to the island from Memphis, Tennessee.
He explained that his family has been vacationing on Sanibel for years as his wife’s grandparents own a condo. She has been coming down since she was a little girl, and he since 2019 when they met.
“We always wanted to move to the island,” Smith said.
In Tennessee, his wife also worked in medical device sales. He worked in management overseeing a team of 40 — one of the things that encouraged and drew him toward owning his own company.
There were also other factors.
“I was spending less time with my family,” Smith said of what his job demanded, adding that their community was changing — and not for the better. “We wanted to raise them in a safer place.”
He noted that he was not looking to specifically buy a pool company, but he saw it for sale and talked to others about the business. Smith added that “the stars kind of aligned” and they closed on its sale.
“What the company needed was some new energy that would come in and plug into the community,” he said.
Founded over five decades ago, Island Condo Maintenance started out as a pool company, which served about 1,500 pools. It also expanded into other revenue streams, like pool management. In 2015, the business changed hands to John and Kim Munger, who owned and operated it up until Smith.
The company services residential and commercial.
“The majority of the pools we take care of are residential,” he said. “We’re looking to expand those relationships and offer services at a higher value — at reasonable pricing.”
Its offerings include service and repair.
“We do everything from installing automation systems to installing auto-fills for pools. We do new pool and motor replacements, installs and repairs,” Smith said, adding that they do complete filter housing repairs. “We can do any repairs on plumbing or reconfigurations.”
Island Condo Maintenance can also build platforms to get the equipment off of the ground.
“We do heaters, heater repairs and installs, as well,” he said.
Smith noted that they are one of the few island-based businesses that do both maintenance and repairs.
“We’re here local and we’re on the island,” he said. “We live on the island.”
The company also sells pool and spa-related supplies, like skimmer poles and chlorine floaters, and commercial businesses can set up an account with them to purchase all their needed chemicals.
In addition, Island Condo Maintenance has a home watch service for seasonal residents.
“We manage everything,” Smith said. “And give the homeowner updates.”
He explained that as the business grows and they invest in new revenue verticals, they will look to expand their services and are open to inquiries and recommendations from the island for those.
“I think we’re trusted a name in the community — and they want more from a name that they trust,” Smith said. “So we’re excited to step into new services in the future.”
