Junonia found on Sanibel

Nate Steere, of Fort Myers, found a junonia on Aug. 15 at about 9:15 a.m. between Bowman’s Beach and Blind Pass Beach on Sanibel. He spotted the shell’s signature pattern in the waves where the ledge of the shore was. “This is my first junonia,” Steere said. “Our family has loved the beach for years.” He added that his wife, Crystal, and daughters Piper, 11, and Avery, 7, have all gotten into shelling this summer. “At this point, it’s mainly the thrill of the hunt for something rare — we’re set for life on fighting conchs,” Steere said. “But I love the peaceful mornings at the shore. It’s almost like a walking meditation.” To report a shell find, contact 239-472-1587 or trepecki@breezenewspapers.com.
