FISH to honor senior neighbors on national day
FISH of Sanibel-Captiva reported that it will recognize National Senior Citizens Day on Aug. 21 — a day dedicated to celebrating the accomplishments, resilience and contributions of older adults.
Established by former President Ronald Reagan in 1988, the national day encourages communities to recognize the generations who have helped shape the nation, while supporting older adults in living healthy, independent and connected lives.
Senior neighbors visiting the FISH Food Pantry on Aug. 21 will receive a special treat, while supplies last, and Meals by FISH volunteers will deliver sweet treats to recipients and other senior clients.
FISH reported that it works alongside island seniors every week through programs designed to reduce isolation, strengthen connections, and help neighbors remain safely and independently in their homes for as long as possible.
“Our seniors have incredible stories, wisdom and experiences that continue to shape our community,” Senior Services Director Erika Arnowitz said. “National Senior Citizens Day gives us the chance to celebrate them in a small but heartfelt way, but our commitment extends far beyond one day. Whether someone stops by the pantry or receives a Meals by FISH delivery, picks up equipment or is a part of our volunteer team, we hope this sweet treat reminds them they are valued, appreciated and part of a community that cares.”
According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2020 Census, one in six Americans is age 65 or older, making older adults one of the fastest growing populations. FISH noted that as communities age, opportunities for social connection, access to services and support that allow seniors to remain independent become increasingly important.
It encourages community members to recognize National Senior Citizens Day by reaching out to an older neighbor, volunteering, offering transportation, sharing a meal or simply spending time with someone who may appreciate the company.
“A visit, a phone call, an invitation to lunch or checking in on a neighbor can make a real difference,” she said.
