TCH to host inaugural Tour de France event
Tickets are available for a Tour de France-focused gathering at The Community House (TCH).
For the first time, TCH will present a Tour de France Screening and Brunch on July 26 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sanibel. It will feature the final stage of the race on the big screen, plus food and drinks.
Executive Director Emily Ankerson explained that their Community Engagement Committee has been looking into additional activities and programs to introduce that the islands might be excited about.
“Because people are so interested in biking and biking is a big part of the island, we thought it would be a good fit,” she said of the gathering, comparing it to their Breakfast at Wimbledon Brunch one.
The screening will take place in the Great Hall, with tables and chairs set up.
“We’ll have it on the drop-down, movie-sized screen,” Ankerson said. “It’ll be live streamed.”
She noted that the Tour de France entails 21 stages of racing, which takes place over 23 days.
“It’ll be the final day of the race that culminates in Paris,” Ankerson said.
A complimentary Paris-themed brunch will be provided.
“It’s tradition for spectators to picnic along the race road, so we are thinking French-themed picnic items,” she said. “Croissants, baguettes, French cheeses, pastries, fresh fruit, dark chocolate.”
Another tradition, the winning cyclist will toast with a glass of champagne.
“We’ll have a bubbly bar with champagne. And we’ll have coffee, water, ice tea and orange juice,” Ankerson said of the included refreshments for attendees.
There will also be door prizes given away, like day-tripper bicycle rentals and island swag.
The Sanibel Bicycle Club will help out as volunteers, as well as have an information table set up.
Billy’s Rentals is the presenting sponsor.
“We definitely want to say thank you for stepping up,” she said.
Supporting sponsors are the bike club, Island Breeze eBikes and On Island.
“And thank you to the others for their support,” Ankerson added.
Tickets are $10 for members and $20 for non-members.
The community is encouraged to reserve a seat.
“We’d love for people to come out and support, and make connections with other people,” she said. “And also, it’s something to do in these summer months that can be kind of quiet on the islands.”
