On July 14, the Santiva Islanders announced that construction has begun on a unisex ADA-accessible restroom at Santiva Islanders Place, its new gathering center in the Palm Ridge Plaza on Sanibel.

The Sanibel Planning Commission approved a conditional use permit for the location in April, with construction of the ADA restroom among its key requirements.

“Construction on the ADA restroom is a major milestone for us,” Santiva Islanders President Katrina Wilhelm said. “Having a dedicated, accessible gathering place means we can better serve the island community that has supported us for more than 30 years.”

An architect and contractor have been engaged. The project is funded in part by a grant from the Charitable Foundation of the Islands (CFI), with the support of Shell Point Retirement Community.

The Santiva Islanders anticipates opening Santiva Islanders Place in the late summer.

It will continue to update the community as construction progresses.

The Santiva Islanders is Sanibel’s volunteer-driven community organization dedicated to health and wellness, education and community service since 1992. For more information, visit https://santivaislanders.org/
