Sanibel library offers range of programs and topics
The Sanibel Public Library provides a variety of programming for adults and children.
With support from the Sanibel Public Library Foundation, the library hosts a series of virtual author talks to include bestselling authors and thought leaders. The next one will take place on Aug. 4 at 2 p.m. with Smithsonian curator and public historian Paula J. Johnson, author of “Julia Child’s Kitchen: The Design, Tools, Stories, and Legacy of an Iconic Space.” She will delve into the legacy of cooking icon Child, whose 20-by-24-foot home kitchen has been on display at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C., for most of the past 23 years.
Johnson conducts research and collects objects relating to the history and culture of American food and serves as the director of the Smithsonian’s Food History Project. She was one of the curators who collected Child’s kitchen in 2001 and led the team that created “FOOD: Transforming the American Table,” an exhibition that explores the major changes in food production, distribution and consumption in the United States since the 1950s. Johnson has shaped and contributed to many public programs on food history and leads the annual “Food History Weekend.” She is the author of many articles and three books. Johnson received the Smithsonian Distinguished Scholar in the Humanities Award in 2020. She began her career at the Calvert Marine Museum in Maryland and has worked at the Smithsonian since 1991. Johnson is a member of the Association for the Study of Food and Society and Les Dames d’ Escoffier. She serves on the editorial collective for “Gastronomica: The Journal for Food Studies.”

Crafternoon will be held on July 29 from 3 to 4 p.m. Open to ages 3 and older, participants will make a work of art. A variety of craft supplies will be available, along with examples and guidance.

WEEKLY PROGRAMMING
– Family Storytime: Fridays and Tuesdays from 10:30 to 11 a.m.
Bring the whole family to enjoy stories, songs, movement and early literacy play centers that spark creativity and motor skills. Open to babies and toddlers and their caregivers.
Library cards are available to residents of Sanibel and Lee County at no charge. Visitor library cards are available for a $10 annual fee.
The library is open on Monday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
