FISH of Sanibel-Captiva will host R.E.A.D.Y. (Respond with Empowerment & Awareness to Defend Yourself) on July 16 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Parish Hall at Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, at 2304 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel.

Open to women and teens ages 13 and older, the free self-defense class is designed to build confidence, awareness and practical safety skills. Led by Lee County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) Crime Prevention Practitioner Chelsea Long, it will include active participation in situational awareness exercises, crisis rehearsal and basic self-defense techniques.

FISH reported that the programming is part of its broader mission to support islanders.

“Resiliency isn’t just about storm prep — it’s also about giving people tools they can use in everyday life. This class is a great way to help women feel safer, more confident and connected to each other,” Community Outreach and Resiliency Director Simon Robson said. “We’re glad to be able to bring that kind of support to the island.”

Long brings professional expertise and personal passion to her role. Born in New Jersey and raised in Cape Coral, she grew up in a family dedicated to education and law enforcement. After earning her bachelor’s degree in American Sign Language Interpreting from the University of South Florida, Long worked in the Lee County schools before joining the LCSO’s Community Response Unit. She speaks to civic groups, HOAs and community organizations about crime trends, fraud prevention and personal safety.

Snacks and water will be provided.

Participants are encouraged to dress comfortably.

Reservations are required by July 13.

FISH extended its gratitude to Saint Michael for providing the venue and the LCSO for sharing the information with the community.
