Quinn Petzoldt, 7, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, found an alphabet cone on June 24 near the Sanddollar Condominiums on Middle Gulf Drive on Sanibel. He was searching for shells with his grandmother when he spotted it. Three days later, he and his grandmother were out about 15 years in the water and she stepped on something sharp. Quinn went under and pulled a horse conch from the sand. “His goal is to clean off the shells and barnacles to get to the conch underneath,” Kristin Petzoldt said of her son. His fourth time visiting the island, he loves swimming in the Gulf, shelling and fishing with his father, Blake Petzoldt. Petzoldt added that she has been vacationing on Sanibel with her family since the late 1980s and she wants to keep the shelling tradition alive with Quinn and his sister, 3-year-old Scarlett.
