U.S. COAST GUARD A U.S. Coast Guard crew rescued a group of eight, including an infant and a child under the age of 5, from a capsizing vessel on July 3 in the Punta Rassa Channel area near the Sanibel Causeway.

A group of eight — including children — was recently rescued off a boat near the Sanibel Causeway.

At about 1 p.m. July 3, U.S. Coast Guard Station Fort Myers Beach watchstanders received a report from a good Samaritan about a 38-foot vessel taking on water in the Punta Rassa Channel. The station’s crew, Lee County Sheriff’s Office and Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission responded.

U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson Riley Perkofski reported that upon arrival, they attempted to use a dewatering pump but were unable to keep up with the amount of water coming into the vessel.

All eight boaters, including an infant and a child under the age of 5, were transferred off of the boat.

“Thanks to the rapid response, professionalism and teamwork of everyone involved, every person was safely recovered from the water,” the U.S. Coast Guard shared via social media.

Perkofski reported that the vessel ended up capsizing in the channel.

It is unknown why the boat was taking on water.

The group was transported to the Punta Rassa Boat Ramp with no reported injuries or medical issues.

“The owner/operator is working with commercial salvage to coordinate recovery of the vessel,” he reported.

The U.S. Coast Guard noted that moments like this are why it trains relentlessly.

“When seconds matter, preparation, communication and teamwork make all the difference,” it shared via social media. “Our thoughts are with those involved, and we’re proud of every responder who played a role in this successful rescue.”

“U.S. Coast Guard Southeast crews remain ready 24/7 to respond to mariners in distress, working alongside partner agencies to protect lives and ensure the safety of those on the water,” Perkofski added.
