The city of Sanibel reported that its “Slow Down Sanibel” campaign reflects an ongoing commitment to preserving the island’s quality of life, while promoting safe, attentive travel.

Launched in the spring, the initiative encourages residents and visitors to experience Sanibel at its natural pace, while supporting safer roadway conditions for pedestrians, cyclists and wildlife.

In May, new wildlife crossing signage was installed at key locations across the island to further reinforce the message. The signs highlight Sanibel’s barrier-island ecology and established wildlife corridors, alerting drivers where species such as bobcats, alligators, eastern screech owls and box turtles are frequently observed.

“Everyone is thus encouraged to remain alert and follow posted speed limits, particularly during peak wildlife activity periods of dawn and dusk,” the city reported.
