The Captiva Memorial Library, which is part of the Lee County Library System, is offering the following free programming:

In addition, the library system is offering the following free virtual programming:
ADULT PROGRAMS
– July 30: Online Beginner Chinese from 6 to 7 p.m.
Learn the basics of Chinese in a relaxed, informal and beginner-friendly class. Presented by library system volunteer Ying Li, participants will focus on simple words, everyday phrases and basic grammar to help them start building sentences. No experience is needed. Registration is required by July 30 at 9 a.m.
– Aug. 4: Online 30 Plus Types of Maps Used in Genealogy Research from 10 to 11 a.m.
Participants will discover how maps can unlock clues about family history and local communities. Explore different types of historical and genealogical maps, learn where to find maps from Europe and the United States, and discover how they can enhance research. Participants will be encouraged to share their favorite map resources and research discoveries.
– Aug. 4: Online Author Event with Paula J. Johnson from 2 to 3 p.m.
Explore Julia Child’s legacy with Smithsonian curator and historian Paula J. Johnson in a conversation about her book “Julia Child’s Kitchen: The Design, Tools, Stories, and Legacy of an Iconic Space.” Discover the stories behind Child’s kitchen — on display at the National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. — including her favorite gadgets, personal quirks and the tools that shaped her legacy. With chef interviews, rich commentary and stunning photos, the program will be a treat for food lovers and Child fans alike. Johnson conducts research and collects objects related to the history and culture of American food, serving as the director of the Smithsonian’s Food History Project. The event is part of the Online Author Events Series. Registration is required.
