Benchmark awarded condo rebuilds on island
Benchmark General Contractors announced that it was recently awarded two condominium reconstruction projects on Sanibel.
They include the complete reconstruction of the Gulf Beach Condo and the Kimball Lodge, both of which sustained extensive damage during Hurricane Ian. Each property will be rebuilt to meet updated building standards and state and federal codes, as well as be designed to enhance long-term durability and storm resilience.
“Rebuilding on Sanibel is about more than construction — it’s about restoring a community and helping it come back stronger than before,” Benchmark owner and President Brad Nickel said. “These projects are an opportunity to deliver high-quality, resilient structures that not only meet today’s standards but are built for the future of coastal living.”
A single-building development, the Gulf Beach project will include the reconstruction of a 14-unit beachfront condominium totaling 28,542 square feet. Construction is scheduled to break ground in the summer and is expected to be completed within 12 months. The project is designed by MK Architecture, with engineering by Michael D. Stewart. P.E. Doug Hrabik will serve as project manager.
The Kimball Lodge project will include a single, 31-unit condominium community totaling 26,982 square feet. Construction was scheduled to break ground in April, and it is anticipated to be completed within 12 months. The project is designed by Christopher J. Lee Architects, with engineering by LB Structural Engineering. Jose Castillo will serve as project manager.
Both projects will be built to the latest standards for flood elevations and hurricane wind codes, utilizing modern construction techniques designed to better protect structures against future storms.
The Gulf Beach Condo is at 527 E. Gulf Drive, Sanibel.
The Kimball Lodge is at 3111 W. Gulf Drive, Sanibel.
