Junonia found on Sanibel

Hayley Johnson, of Marquette, Michigan, found a junonia on May 17 at about 7 p.m. at Bowman’s Beach on Sanibel. Her first time finding one, she spotted the shell during low tide in shin-deep water, close to shore. Johnson and her husband were visiting the island for their second time. “Eric and I were there to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary, so what an absolute treat it was to find a junonia!” she said. Johnson noted that they have been to Bowman’s Beach — their favorite — and other beaches a handful of times each. “We have loved shelling on Sanibel Island!” she added. “But who can’t love Sanibel?” To report a shell find, contact 239-472-1587 or trepecki@breezenewspapers.com.
