FISH of Sanibel-Captiva will host a Social Media and Internet Security workshop on June 4 from 11 a.m. to noon in Fellowship Hall at the Sanibel Community Church on Sanibel.

Presented by Lee County Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Practitioner Chelsea Long, it will will focus on staying safe online in a world where scams, fake websites and online fraud continue to grow.

The workshop will help participants better understand current online risks and how to protect personal information, while continuing to safely connect with family, friends and the community online.

“People are receiving scam website links and social media messages every single day. Many look legitimate,” FISH Community Outreach and Resiliency Director Simon Robson said. “This workshop helps people slow down, recognize warning signs, and know what steps to take before personal information or finances are compromised. Even a few simple changes can make a big difference.”

The topics will include:

– How to safeguard identity and personal information

– What to do if someone becomes a victim

– Current online trends impacting the public

– Tips for safer use of social media and internet

FISH encourages community members of all ages to attend, especially older adults, caregivers and individuals who may feel uncertain about navigating online platforms safely.

“Unfortunately, social media and fake websites continue to target people every day, especially seniors,” he said. “This workshop gives people information they can actually use. The more informed our community is, the better prepared they are to protect themselves and those around them.”

Light refreshments will be provided.

The workshop is free and open to the public.

RSVPs are required by June 2.
