The “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge (DDWS) reported that the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge will continue work throughout the summer repairing boardwalks on trails that were damaged by Hurricane Ian in 2022.

The DDWS provided the following updates:

– Bailey Tract: Boardwalks are nearing completion and will reopen to the public in early June after federal inspection.

– Indigo Trail: Materials to repair the longest boardwalk begin to arrive last week. Staff expect a five-week timeframe to complete the project.

– Mangrove Overlook: Work on the boardwalk will begin once the Indigo Trail is completed, tentatively in mid-July.

The J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge is at 1 Wildlife Drive, Sanibel.
