The city of Sanibel announced the temporary closure of a portion of the Pond Apple Park Trail to allow for necessary repairs to one of the boardwalk structures within the trail system.

It reported that the closure is necessary so city crews can safely complete structural repairs and help ensure the continued safety, integrity and long-term usability of the boardwalk.

Work was set to begin on April 20 and is expected to be completed by April 26, weather permitting. During this time, the eastern section of the trail, from Bailey Road to the ponds, will be closed.

The western section, from the Roadside City Park to the ponds, remains open for use.

Visitors are strongly encouraged to avoid the closed eastern section of the trail and surrounding work areas. Choosing alternate recreational locations will help ensure public safety and allow crews to complete the work efficiently and without interruption.

For the safety of the public and city crews, the closed portion will be fully restricted during the duration of the work. The public is strongly urged to remain out of the work area and to follow all posted signage, barricades and closures. Entering the closed area may present serious safety hazards, including exposure to construction equipment, unstable surfaces and active repair operations.

“The city appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation as these important maintenance efforts are completed,” it shared. “These repairs are necessary to help maintain safe and accessible recreational facilities for residents and visitors alike.”
