LOCAL ROOTS From left, Local Roots co-owners Betsy Ventura and Jean Baer operate the weekly Captiva Island Farmers Market, which will hold its final event on April 28 at The Shops at South Seas.

The Captiva Island Farmers Market will wrap up for the season next week with its last event.

Celebrating its eighth season, the final market will take place on April 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Shops at South Seas on Captiva. Free and open to the public, the weekly events kick off in the fall.

Organized by Local Roots — co-owned by islanders Jean Baer and Betsy Ventura — the market features a different mix of vendors and products, as well as crafters, prepared meals and more.

“Our goal was to create a local weekly gathering place where people can enjoy fresh products, support small businesses and experience the charm of Captiva in one spot,” Ventura said of the island event.

She noted that this season was stronger than the last few years.

“You could really tell that the island has made huge progress from the damages of three hurricanes,” Ventura said.

About 25 vendors are participating in the market this season.

“We have fresh organic produce, local seafood, cheese, honey, breads, pastries, prepared gourmet food to take home, organic pressed juices, made-to-order crepes, pizza, cuban sandwiches, tacos, guacamole, arts and crafts, and so much more,” she said. “Something for everyone.”

Local crafters and artisans are also taking part again.

“We love to give shoppers a taste of local color, so we include a few artists and crafters in the market each season,” Ventura said. “Jean and I believe it adds to the market experience by bringing in handmade, one-of-a-kind items that reflect Southwest Florida.”

In addition, different nonprofits and organizations are offered booth space every week.

“We are happy to let the Captiva library join us throughout the season at no charge because they provide a valuable service to the community,” she said of one local participant. “It’s a way for us to support local education, outreach, while helping residents and visitors learn about our wonderful library.”

On behalf of Baer and herself, Ventura shared appreciation for the community’s support.

“We continue to be thankful to our host, South Seas resort,” she said. “Without them allowing us space to operate, I don’t think we would exist.”

“Jean and I also would like to give a shout out to the entire Sanibel-Captiva community, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office officers and the Captiva Island Fire Control District for their support,” Ventura added.

The public is invited to swing by for the final market.

“Come out and enjoy the last market of the season,” she said. “It’s a great chance to stock up on your favorite market goodies, grab some breakfast or lunch, and pick up some unique finds.”

Parking is located across the street.

Pet owners are welcome to bring their family pooches.

As for next season, the market will begin in November.

Applications will open on the website by June for participants interested in the 2026-27 season.
