SCCF, partners write to water managers
The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) reported that it and partners across South Florida joined a sign-on letter to ask the South Florida Water Management District and U.S. Army Corps to increase flows to the Caloosahatchee Estuary. Sent on April 6, it asks water managers to increase flows to the optimal range of 750 cubic feet per second (cfs). The SCCF reported that the estuary has been below the optimum flow envelope for 163 days. When the estuary does not receive the flows that it requires, it stresses the organisms that rely on a healthy estuary. It can result in the immediate loss of organisms, such as tape grass, as well as long-term impacts on the health of local fisheries. Increasing flows is even more dire as the start of the oyster spawning draws closer.
