Sanibel recognizes Gopher Tortoise Day
At its March 31 meeting, the Sanibel City Council issued a proclamation designating April 10 as Gopher Tortoise Day on Sanibel.
The city reported that the gopher tortoise is considered a keystone species — a species on which other animals within an ecosystem largely depend on — and is an important indicator of ecosystem health. Their burrows are home to over 360 other species of wildlife, some of which would not exist without gopher tortoises. Unfortunately, due to habitat loss, disease, poaching, extreme weather events and other challenges, gopher tortoise populations have declined an estimated 60-80% in the last century. As a result, the gopher tortoise is listed as a threatened species and is protected by the state of Florida.
Sanibel has historically sustained a sizable population of gopher tortoises, which inhabited conservation lands, residential neighborhoods and commercial properties. Sadly, hurricanes in 2022 and 2024 had a devastating impact on the island’s species. The recovery of gopher tortoise populations and their habitats will require continued commitment by the citizens of Sanibel.
“You can show your appreciation and help ensure the long-term recovery of gopher tortoises on Sanibel by creating a ‘tortoise friendly landscape,’ including a diversity of native grasses and wildflowers,” the city shared.
Also, residents are encouraged to keep a watchful eye for gopher tortoises while traveling across the island by vehicle, by bicycle or on foot. If one sees a gopher tortoise crossing a road, they may pick it up and place it on the roadside in the direction that it was heading — but only if it is safe to do so.
“Please join us in celebrating Gopher Tortoise Day!” the city shared. “Spread of the word on the importance of conserving and protecting this important keystone species on our sanctuary island.”
