The “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge (DDWS) reported that the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge’s Wildlife on Wheels (WoW) mobile classroom team recently taught sixth graders at Oak Hammock Middle School in Tice how microplastics occur and harm all living things. Students simulated shorebirds trying to only eat food (rice) with their beaks (tongs or spoons) without getting any microplastics (lentils) into their bodies. They learned how microplastics can cause a mutation in DNA molecules — the building blocks of all life. On April 17, the WoW transferred to Hancock Creek Elementary School in North Fort Myers through April 27.
