Fishing club to hold monthly meeting
The Sanibel Island Fishing Club will hold its next meeting of the season on April 14 at 6 p.m. at The Community House, at 2173 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel, with a half-hour social gathering beforehand.
The guest speaker will be Capt. Matt Mitchell, out of Saint James City on Pine Island.
With the arrival of spring, he will discuss the big three inshore species: spotted sea trout, redfish and snook. Mitchell will also talk about the fourth — and most challenging — fish: the silver king, or tarpon. He will cover where and when to find them, what kind of gear he uses and, most importantly, what baits he prefers to get them to bite.
Mitchell has been an active licensed fishing guide since 2000. He spends up to 300 days a year on the water and knows how to catch fish. Mitchell’s focus is on both inshore and nearshore angling. He typically targets the big three inshore species. In addition, Mitchell writes a weekly fishing report for a local newspaper.
The meeting is free and open to the public.
Refreshments and The Great White Grill pizza slices will be available for a nominal charge.
