FISH recognizes volunteers, looks to summer
In honor of National Volunteer Month in April, FISH of Sanibel-Captiva extended its appreciation to the over 200 volunteers who give their time throughout the year to support neighbors across the islands.
“Volunteers are truly at the heart of everything we do. They show up, they are eager to help, they lend a hand and they care,” Volunteer & Office Coordinator Mary Jean “MJ” Hays said. “It’s not just the hours they give — it’s the way they give them. That makes all the difference for the people we serve.”
FISH reported that it offers a range of volunteer opportunities, including support for the food pantry, senior services, transportation, educational workshops, community events and seasonal initiatives.
As the season winds down, it typically sees a shift in volunteer availability, with many seasonal residents heading north for the summer. It does create a gap in volunteer support during a time when services remain steady, so FISH relies on a small dedicated group to help keep services running.
It is currently seeking one or two volunteers to assist with the monthly Friendly Faces luncheons. They will help serve meals, assist with set up and clean up, and help create a welcoming environment for attendees. The time commitment is typically for the second Tuesday of each month from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at The Community House on Sanibel.
FISH noted that because the role involves food service, volunteers are required to complete the ServSafe Food Handler certification. It covers the cost of the course, which is valid for three years.

“During National Volunteer Month and beyond, FISH recognizes all individuals who continue to give what is often the most meaningful gift — their time,” it shared.
