The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) is seeking volunteers for its Gopher Tortoise Habitat Enhancement Project on March 5 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the C.R. Johnson Preserve on Sanibel. It focuses on improving the open, sandy upland (coastal scrub) environments that gopher tortoises rely on for burrowing, nesting and foraging. Key tasks will include removing invasive plant species and thinning overgrown vegetation, which will make way for the planting of native ground cover later on in the project. The work is critically important because gopher tortoises are a keystone species — more than 350 other animals use their burrows for shelter and survival.
