The Sanibel Police Department (SPD) reported that to keep students safe and reduce speeding in school zones, it currently operates an automated speed enforcement program using cameras in the school zone at The Sanibel School.

Citations will be issued to drivers exceeding the posted speed limit by more than 10 mph in the designated school zone on Sanibel-Captiva Road on school days.

The Sanibel City Council voted to implement the program after the Florida Legislature passed a law authorizing local governments to use automated speed detection cameras to increase safety in school zones. The initiative aligns with the state’s legal framework for the use of photo speed monitoring devices in school zones, ensuring compliance and safety across the board.

“Keeping kids safe on their way to and from school is a priority for all of us,” Police Chief William Dalton said. “Drivers speeding through school zones puts our children and parents at risk.”

The SPD highlighted the following key information:

– Automated speed enforcement will only occur on school days between 6:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

– From 6:30 to 7:45 a.m., the flashing school zone lights will be on for student drop off and the speed limit is 20 mph.

– From 7:46 a.m. to 1:44 p.m. during the school day, the normal speed limit is 35 mph.

– From 1:45 to 2:30 p.m., the flashing school zone lights will be on for student pick up and the speed limit is 20 mph.

– Violation threshold: More than 10 mph over the posted speed limit

– Citation cost: $100

– Speed zone cameras are not active outside school hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays and summer break.

“This program is about reminding drivers to slow down where it matters most and to increase the safety of our school families through driver compliance,” Dalton said.
