The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) will host a Guided Gopher Tortoise Walk on March 12 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Sanibel. Part of its Gopher Tortoise Habitat Enhancement Project, it will be led by wildlife biologists and education staff. Participants will explore preserves to learn firsthand about the role gopher tortoises play in the ecosystem and local efforts being done to help protect the threatened species. Using a scope, they will get a closer look inside tortoise burrows and gain insight into how the keystone species support hundreds of other animals. The walk will also include following biologists on a mock survey, where participants will learn how the SCCF monitors tortoise populations and habitat health. Due to the walk being on preserves with no public access, transportation will be provided by the SCCF. Tickets are $10.
