Refuge provides update on WoW
The “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge (DDWS) reported that the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge’s Wildlife on Wheels (WoW) mobile classroom recently taught third-grade gifted students at San Carlos Park Elementary in Fort Myers about the five major groups of vertebrates, including sea turtles and other reptiles. The students then looked at plant and animal cells under microscopes to see up-close the building blocks of vertebrates, invertebrates and other living things. On Feb. 26, the WoW team headed to Orange River Elementary in Fort Myers for a two-week visit. In addition, the WoW recently spent two days at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers devoted to STEM — Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The team taught 865 students from participating local schools using hands-on experiments. It concentrated on the feeding habits of the white ibis on one day, and it taught how spiders use their spinnerets to weave webs for catching prey on the second day.
