Kiwanis holds meetings with speakers
The Sanibel-Captiva Kiwanis Club recently welcomed Local Roots co-owner Jean Baer as its guest speaker at a meeting. Organizer of the Sanibel and Captiva farmers markets, she spoke about seeing more families and multiple generations attending and how that sense of community continues to grow. Baer offered a behind-to-scenes look at running multiple markets and the balance of welcoming new vendors, while keeping longtime favorites. At a following meeting, the club welcomed Ken Bergener. He shared the history and importance of America’s road systems. His discussion covered how roads connect communities, support the economy and reflect the nation’s growth — along with Eisenhower’s influence on the modern highway system. Guest speaker and Community Housing & Resources Deputy Director Becky Boyd presented on “From Classrooms to Kitchens: How Housing Shapes the People Who Serve Our Community” at a recent meeting. She offered meaningful insight into how workforce housing directly impacts educators, service workers and essential staff who keep Sanibel and Captiva thriving. Also, Hearts and Homes for Veterans Chief Executive Officer Dale Spain and his team spoke at a meeting. Dedicated to supporting local veterans in need, the nonprofit shared its mission and the vital work that it does across the community. The club meets on Tuesdays at 7 a.m. at The Dunes Golf and Tennis Club, at 949 Sand Castle Road, Sanibel. For more information, visit sancapkiwanis.org.
