Silent auction to support Protect Captiva
The Captiva Civic Association (CCA) will host a fundraiser for the Protect Captiva Legal Fund.
Free and open to the public, the Silent Art Auction will take place on Feb. 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Captiva Civic Center on Captiva. The event will feature artwork, entertainment, food and drinks.
“We’re hosting this for two reasons,” CCA Board President Lisa Riordan said.
She explained that local artists had voiced interest in taking part in a fundraiser to benefit the fund for the coalition, which seeks to maintain the island’s longtime building height and density limitations.
“They offered to donate art that would be sold,” she said.
“We’re hosting it also because we host at least four art shows each season at the Captiva Civic Association,” Riordan added. “So we thought this was the perfect venue for it.”
All proceeds will benefit the fund, which was established in 2023 when the county moved to change the zoning on Captiva to allow for greater density and higher building heights at South Seas.
“The community has been involved in objecting to those changes and protecting our fragile barrier island,” she said.
The auction will feature over 20 pieces from about a dozen artists.
“They’re all primarily island artists,” Riordan said, noting that some are from the local area.
Mostly paintings of various sizes, there are oils on linen, watercolors and more.
“There is also a couple of photographs,” she said. “They range from beachy to modern art.”
In addition to the in-person bidding, people can participate online.
“It’s simultaneously going to be online, so those supporters of Protect Captiva who may not be on island can bid if they want to,” Riordan said.
Online bidding will remain open until Feb. 12 at noon, and participants can rebid on items.
At the fundraiser, musician Dan Confrey will provide the live entertainment.
“It’s one of our typical art openings,” she said. “So we will have light fare and adult refreshments available.”
No tickets or RSVPs are required to attend.
“All are welcome,” Riordan said. “It’s an open house for those in the community who want to stop by.”
The public is encouraged to attend or participate online.
“This is an opportunity for folks to not only come and share some cheer with their neighbors and friends, but also support Protect Captiva’s Legal Fund, which has great support across the community and outside of the community,” she said, noting that over 1,600 people have donated to the cause.
“That’s why we wanted to make sure that those outside of the area can take part,” Riordan added.
For those who want to support Protect Captiva without bidding, donations are welcome.
