Shell museum to offer class
The Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum & Aquarium will host a Creating Sailors’ Valentines on Feb. 24 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Feb. 27 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 3075 Sanibel-Captiva Road, Sanibel. A sailors’ Valentine is an intricate and historic art form based on using shells to create kaleidoscopic designs in octagonal boxes. With their origins in early 19th century Barbados, the art of creating them gained new popularity in the mid-20th century and continues today. Participants will craft their own sailors’ Valentine and learn the principles of the art form. Experience is not required. Provided materials will include boxes, shells, other items, glue and everything needed; participants are welcome — but not required — to bring their own small shells to include or items for a centerpiece.
