REFUGE/DDWS Island author Jeri Magg will speak about Sanibel's history from a female perspective.

The 21st annual “Ding” Darling Lecture Series will continue with Sanibel author Jeri Magg on March 5 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. at The Roost at the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel.

She shares the stories of 36 island females in her book, “Remarkable Women of Sanibel & Captiva.” From pioneers like Esperanza Woodring and Chico’s co-founder Helene Gralnick, to bike path proponent Mariel Goss and refuge land (Perry Tract) donor and ophthalmologist Dr. Louise Merrimon Perry, the book takes an inspiring ride through island bygones. A resident since 1980 and former newspaper contributor, Magg has been writing about island history as a freelancer for over 20 years.

A book signing will follow the lecture.

The “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge co-hosts the series with the refuge and through financial support from sponsors. Peter B. and Joanne S. Griffin are sponsoring this lecture.

The remaining series schedule is as follows:

– March 26: Author and photographer Paul Bannick, “Woodpecker: A Year in the Life of North American Woodpeckers”*

– April 2: Beekeepers Association of Southwest Florida, “Live Hive & Taste: Observing Live Bees with Honey-Tasting”
