Rec center provides update on activities, events
The Sanibel Recreation Center reported on upcoming programs and activities.
A collaboration with the Sanibel Public Library and MacIntosh Books + Paper, One Community, One Book will meet on Feb. 19 at noon. The book club is designed to bring neighbors together through literature with local ties. “The Light Pirate,” by Lily Brooks-Dalton, will be discussed. Light refreshments will be provided. The event is free, but registration is required.
Angel Hair by Barbie will be held on Feb. 20 from noon to 3 p.m. Registration is required.
Teen Scene: Spinz Roller Rink will take place on Feb. 20 from 6 to 11 p.m. The program is open to grades 7-9. The cost is $6 for members and $8 for non-members for transportation. Self-pay admission at the rink is $14, plus $5 for skates rental. Registration is required.
Bootscootin’ Prom Night will be held on Feb. 20 at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $15 for members and $20 for non-members. Registration is required.
The city’s Reduce Your Waste Size Series will be held on Feb. 21 from 10 to 11 a.m. with Sanibel Chief Resilience Officer Ashlee Painter. The workshop will be on “Food Waste & Composting.” Attendees will learn ways to reduce their food waste and make soil for their garden. The workshop is free, but registration is required.
The American Red Cross will provide a Hands Only CPR class on Feb. 21 at 11 a.m. The complimentary training session will cover the prevention, recognition,and response to sudden cardiac arrest; it is non-certified and aimed solely at raising awareness about CPR techniques. Registration is required.
The American Heart Association will present Understanding Your Heart’s Signals on Feb. 23 at noon. The free class will offer a calm, informative look at how one’s heart communicates when something is not right. Attendees will learn common warning signs and what it is important to seek help. Registration is required.
The Sanibel Fire and Rescue District will offer complimentary blood pressure testing on Feb. 23 at 9 to 11:30 a.m. in the lobby. Open to the public; no registration is required.
Get to Know Your Island will take place on Feb. 24 at noon. The program will highlight the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW). The speaker series is designed to connect the community with people and organizations that make Sanibel unique. Light refreshments will be provided. The program is free, but registration is required.
Wellness Wednesdays will take place on Feb. 25 at 1 p.m. Dr. Joe Blanda will present “Wellness in Nature.” The program is free, but registration is required.
The center is open on Mondays through Thursdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Fridays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Beach parking permits are available for purchase.
