The Captiva Civic Association (CCA) recently unveiled the third exhibit in its 2025-26 Art Series, plus new exercise classes.

Opened with an artist reception on Feb. 18, “Somewhere Over The Causeway” will be on display from now through March 12 at the Captiva Civic Center. It features a number of pieces by Lacy McClary.

“Art has the power to not only inspire, but to bring the community together,” CCA Director Lauren McCraney said. “So we like to not only support our local artists, but find ways to bring the community together.”

McClary has created her artwork out of her Sanibel and Fort Myers Beach studios over the last 18 years. Losing both in Hurricane Ian in 2022 has not deterred her from touching the community with her color and inspiration. McClary has a fierce love of the islands, the water, and the local community.

“Lacy was an artist here at the CCA two years ago, so this is a return exhibition,” McCraney said, adding that McClary was the featured artist for the CCA’s annual ABC Gala on Feb. 26. “She is a huge contributor, activist and community member within the islands.”

“Somewhere Over The Causeway” features nearly 30 large-scale pieces.

“And I have some smaller pieces,” McClary said.

She reported that she works in mixed media, so there are oils, acrylics, inks and such.

“When people go over the causeway, it’s a happy land. So it’s a happy show — really vibrant, bright colors,” McClary said. “It’s about regrowth and blooming — embracing the island and scenery.”

All of the artwork is available for purchase.

“With a portion of it going back to the CCA to be able to offer programs and continue our community work,” McCraney said.

Bank of the Islands is the sponsor for this year’s Art Series.

“We love having the Bank of the Islands continue to support our community with all of their sponsorships and outreach,” she said. “And for understanding how important art is not just for the CCA and Captiva, but for the greater community.”

Karen Bell and the Bell Team, with Michael Saunders and Company, is the season sponsor.

“We love Karen Bell. We’re so grateful that she has been a longtime member of the CCA for over 30 years,” McCraney said, adding that the CCA is appreciative of her sponsorship for another year.

Free to the public, the gallery is open Monday through Friday from 1 to 3 p.m.

The community is welcome to stop in.

“Lacy’s art is stunning and beautiful,” she said. “Come and tour the gallery, and buy some art that goes to a good cause.”

ISLAND YOGA AT CCA

Island Yoga at CCA with Yali Zawady is taking place on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Yoga Flow is held from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. and Gentle Yoga is held from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. at the center on Captiva.

The classes are running through March.

“The CCA is happy to host her for the residents and guests of Captiva and Sanibel,” McCraney said.

A vinyasa flow practice, Yoga Flow links invigorating breath to mindful movement. Participants will explore inner-strength, postures and balance and integrate different wellness elements into the practice.

Gentle Yoga is a slower-paced class focused on stretching, breathing and relaxation. Participants will increase their flexibility, body awareness and stress relief. It compliments other physical activities.

Mats are available, but it is recommended that participants bring their own.

“If you have your own feel free to bring it,” she said.

They are paid classes, with packages available, and registration is required.

The community is invited to check it out.

“It’s a great way to stretch the body, connect with your breath and meet new friends,” McCraney said.

QI GONG

Qi Gong with Dyan Sierra is taking place on Wednesdays from 9 to 10 a.m. at the center.

McCraney explained that the CCA is offering the program as an another opportunity for those interested in getting their body moving and connecting with other community members and nature.

“She does it outside on our patio or down on the beach,” she noted.

Qigong is an ancient Chinese practice that combines slow movements, deep breathing and mindful intention. Together, they help to balance one’s internal energy, strengthen one’s muscles, improve circulation and mobilize joints. It is also referred to as the “Life Force Energy” that improves health and increases vitality, while helping to reduce stress.

During the first half of class, participants will “activate” their “Qi,” which is their internal energy that can become stuck or stagnant. During the second half, they will move their bodies to “flow” movements that are relaxing and help to calm the mind and nervous system.

Wearing light, breathable clothing is recommended.

“You want to be able to flow and move with ease,” McCraney said.

Participants will need to bring a towel to sit on during the meditation portion, plus a water bottle.

The classes are free, but registration is required.

The community is encouraged to sign up.

“It’s a beautiful ancient tradition, Qi Gong,” she said. “Get out, meet people and move your body.”
