The Sanibel Public Library provides a variety of programming for adults and children.

Malacology 101 will take place on Jan. 29 from 11 a.m. to noon with Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum and Aquarium marine biologist and collection assistant Chris Witt. He will break down the basics of mollusks and shelling, and why the soft-bodied creatures with hard shells are way cooler than one might think. Witt has spent the last four years sharing his passion for mollusks with the public, especially through the “Mollusks on the Move” program, which reaches over 15,000 youths each year.

On Feb. 2, Chat with an Author: Michelle D. Gladieux will be held from from 11 a.m. to noon. A communication expert, she will lead an interactive session focused on helping attendees become braver, more effective communicators. Drawing from her book, “Communicate with Courage,” Gladieux will share practical strategies to overcome four hidden challenges that often hinder everyday communication and workplace interactions. The free program is being presented by the library and Charitable Foundation of the Islands. Registration is required at sanlib.org/calendar; the first 50 registered will receive her book. “Communicate with Courage” is the winner of 11 literary awards.

Surviving the Storms — Hurricanes, Humans & Wildlife will take place on Feb. 3 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with Charles Sobczak. The in-depth presentation will look at the impact major hurricanes have had on properties, landscapes and wildlife. An award-winning author of fiction and non-fiction, he has been a featured speaker with Road Scholars for over 20 years. Sobczak has also appeared on Book TV and has lectured for organizations like the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge, and Harvard Club.
