CITY OF SANIBEL The Sanibel City Council recognized City Clerk Scotty Lynn Kelly for earning the Florida Certified Professional Clerk certification at its meeting on Dec. 16.

The city of Sanibel released the following summary of the Sanibel City Council’s regular meeting, which was held on Dec. 16 in MacKenzie Hall at City Hall on Sanibel:

PRESENTATIONS

– The council recognized City Clerk Scotty Lynn Kelly for earning the Florida Certified Professional Clerk (FCPC) certification.

– Chief Resilience Officer Ashlee Painter and SanCap Resilience Steering Committee Chair Bob Moore provided a presentation on the Solar United Neighbors’ (SUN) Switch Together Program. DREDGING ASSESSMENT DISTRICT

A public hearing was held and the council approved resolutions related to the Sanibel Harbours Inlet Dredging Assessment District, which established the district and assessment equalization board. It approved an annual special assessment on 44 properties to fund the dredging project and to create a dedicated fund for future projects.

VULNERABILITY ASSESSMENT

Natural Resources Director Holly Milbrandt and consultant Cummins Cederberg provided a presentation summarizing a study on how flooding and sea level rise could impact the city’s critical facilities and infrastructure. The council voted to approve the draft for submittal to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP). CAUSEWAY FEASIBILITY STUDY

Consultant Kimley-Horn presented its findings on the feasibility of restriping the Sanibel Causeway to add a third travel lane in response to resident concerns about traffic congestion. It evaluated the current causeway cross-section against lane-width standards set by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), Florida Greenbook, and American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). CODE DISCUSSION, FIRST READING

A Code of Ordinances discussion and first reading were held related to correcting language for the supplemental contribution of the Municipal Police Officers’ Retirement Trust Fund.

IN OTHER NEWS

– The council voted to rescind a previously adopted motion to install a three-way stop sign at the intersection of Sanibel-Captiva Road and Rabbit Road. It also reaffirmed the motion to install wildlife crossing signs and investigate traffic calming options to protect wildlife.
