Historical village to present film about lighthouse
Tickets are available for the Sanibel Historical Museum and Village’s next Twilight Talk program.
“Remembering the Lighthouse” will take place on Dec. 16 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Shore Haven at the village on Sanibel. It will entail a screening of “Secrets and Stories of the Sanibel Lighthouse.”
“We have interest in our documentary films, so we look for an opportunity to be able to show them,” Executive Director Pamela Miner said.
Produced by Ken Sneeden, the film explores the iconic lighthouse’s history and its survival during Hurricane Ian. An award-winning journalist and longtime creator of historical documentaries for Sanibel and Captiva, he brings his deep research and visual storytelling to the compelling feature.
“We wanted to be able to tell the story, to bring the story to light, about the lighthouse and the complex at the lighthouse,” she said. “It’s more significant now following Hurricane Ian with the lighthouse being the structure that does remain of the complex that was there.”
Sneeden is expected to be in attendance to do a Q&A.
A television station executive, he founded his Fort Myers-based multimedia company in 1991, which produces high-impact videos and multimedia presentations for national clients. In 2016, Sneeden brought his skills to the islands. His research ethic, along with his passion for local history, has resulted in numerous full-length documentaries created for the village and Captiva Island Historical Society.
Starting at 3:30 p.m., attendees will have an opportunity to view artifacts from the original lighthouse Keepers Quarters and the light tower’s “prosthetic” structure that are now on display at the village.
“One of the large pieces is the cistern from the keepers cottage. We have the prosthetic leg, as well,” Miner said. “And there are some other metal pieces and parts that were structural.”
Tickets are $20.
The public is encouraged to come out.
“It’s an opportunity for the community to come together and be able to learn or relearn and experience the lighthouse and the lighthouse complex — and to be able to talk about it and ask questions,” she said. “Especially now that it has changed since the documentary was first created and shown.”
