CAPTIVA ISLAND HISTORICAL SOCIETY “Gift from the Sea” by Anne Morrow Lindbergh

The Captiva Island Historical Society (CIHS) is set to present its next program of the season.

“Anne Morrow and More” will be held on Dec. 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the Captiva Civic Center on Captiva. It will celebrate the 70th anniversary of “Gift from the Sea,” authored by Anne Morrow Lindbergh. Time spent on Captiva inspired her to pen the book.

“This is one of our premier events of the season,” CIHS Public Relations Director and Board Secretary Kathy Ferrari said. “It’s in honor of the 70th anniversary of her book, written about Captiva.”

Created by archivist and Board Member Queenie Viglione and documentation Ken Sneeden, the original script program will blend poignant passages from “Gift from the Sea” with tidbits from the CIHS’ archives on what was happening on Captiva and worldwide in the early 1950s.

“It is going to have a resident of Captiva, Lisa Riordan, playing the role of Anne Morrow Lindbergh,” she said. “Accompanying that will be videos of not just Captiva, but also what was going on in the 1950s.”

CIHS Director Capt. Brian Holaway will serve as the emcee for the event.

There will be appetizers and a cash bar.

In addition, MacIntosh Books + Paper will have copies of Lindbergh’s book available for sale.

“So they’ll have a chance to purchase that,” Ferrari said.

The program is sponsored by the Dave Jensen Memorial Fund.

“The continued support for the Dave Jensen Memorial Fund allows us to put these on,” she said.

Florida Trust Wealth Management is the presenting sponsor for the CIHS’ season.

“We are grateful to our season sponsor,” Ferrari said. “We couldn’t have a season without them.”

Tickets are $15 per person; reservations are requested.

The community is invited to reserve a seat.

“She and her husband, Charles, are among the many interesting people who visited and had a legacy here,” she said. “This is a really interesting event for people who want to embrace the history here and hear inside stories on what life was like at that time.”
