CEPD signs off on deal to allow for city project
The Captiva Erosion Prevention District’s (CEPD) commission approved an agreement with the city of Sanibel to allow it to utilize its contract for the city’s own beach project at a recent special meeting.
On Nov. 17, the commissioners voted unanimously 5-0 on a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the city for the North Sanibel Beach Renourishment Project. It allows the city to piggyback off of the CEPD’s agreement with its Captiva project contractor, Great Lakes Dredge & Dock, so the city can do its own project. Per the agreement, the city will pay the CEPD $168,602.07 for costs and expenses.
Sanibel’s project will place about 300,000 cubic yards of sand along the northern stretch, covering the area from near the former Mad Hatter Restaurant to the western edge of Bowman’s Beach Park.
Also at the meeting, the commission voted 5-0 on an amendment to its agreement with Great Lakes. The change allows the city to piggyback off of the CEPD’s contract to conduct the beach project.
Prior to the votes, General Manager Brighton Heard provided an update. He reported that staff reexamined the city’s cost-share and reworked the figure as directed by the commissioners.
“So it’s been adjusted slightly,” Heard said.
Before the vote on amending the CEPD’s agreement with Great Lakes, Chairman John Wade asked staff to confirm that the change would not impact the CEPD’s reimbursement from the contractor.
The CEPD’s attorney confirmed that it would not be impacted.
Also during the meeting, the commission directed staff to proceed immediately with a temporary “phase I” for dune walkways. Staff will clear 2 feet of sand at Andy Rosse Lane as a trial, which the commissioners will revisit in a month to decide if it will work or more sand needs to be removed.
